Afshin Mehin

Card 79 was founded in 2014 by Afshin Mehin as a vehicle for exploring future forms. With a background in engineering and design, Afshin consistently blurs the boundaries between the digital and the physical, and between the old and the new. He’s worked with visionary startups like Neuralink and Noon Home, honed his design sensibility with masters at Barber Osgerby and Terence Conran, and partnered with the likes of Amazon, Lululemon and Ford to launch new products that transform businesses. Prior to Card79, Afshin worked at IDEO and Whipsaw in the Bay Area and M.I.T.’s Media Lab Europe in Dublin.

Applied Intuition in Industrial Design

IDC

Presentation

August 23, 2023

2:35 PM - 3:00 PM

Ballroom

The session will explore the role of intuition in industrial design and product decision-making. In today's data-driven world, where AI and quantification are becoming increasingly prevalent in the design process, how do designers utilize their intuition to make effective product decisions? What is intuition, and where does it come from? The talk will delve into the benefits of using intuition in the product design process, along with the situations where intuition might be more useful than relying solely on data. By exploring the do's and don'ts of utilizing intuition, this session aims to provide practical insights on how industrial designers can leverage intuition to create better products.

The audience will learn. . .

(1) Clarity on the concept of intuition: The talk will provide a clear definition of intuition and dispel any ambiguity surrounding the term. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of what intuition is and what it is not.

(2) Understanding of intuition's role in the design process: In a world where AI and data are increasingly prevalent in the design process, it can be challenging to know when to rely on intuition versus data. This talk will provide attendees with insights into how intuition fits into the design process alongside MORE QUANTIFIED TECHNIQUES, enabling them to make better-informed decisions.

(3) Techniques for nurturing intuition: As technology continues to saturate our world, it's essential to continue to nurture and develop our intuition as a valuable tool in the design process. This talk will provide practical guidance on how to nurture intuition and ensure it remains a key asset in product design.
